Bhutan experiences cool weather most of the time, so carrying warm woolen clothes is ideal. Depending on the season and region, raingear may also be necessary, as higher altitudes experience rainfall frequently.

Photography Permissions

Photography is prohibited in private properties and government sites. However, you can always ask for permission. While outdoor photography is allowed, it is typically not permitted in monasteries, dzong shrine chambers, or other places of worship.

Telecommunications

Indian networks can be accessed in some regions, but getting a local SIM card is a better option. Bhutan offers ISD, STD, and B-Mobile services for connectivity. The STD code for Bhutan is 00975.

Bhutan Post

The general post office has offices in every town where you can send postcards. It operates from 9 AM – 5 PM Monday to Friday (Saturday until 12 PM). Parcels can be sent via Bhutan Post, and DHL services are also available in Thimphu.

Radio

Bhutan Broadcasting Service provides different programs via shortwave transmission. FM radio stations like Kuzoo FM 90 broadcast from 6 AM – 9 PM daily.

Electricity

The available voltage is 220/240 volts with three-pin round and two-pin outlets.

Television

Bhutan Broadcasting Service transmits from 7:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM - 11:00 PM daily. Cable television is widely available, including channels like CNN, BBC, Star Movies, Star Sports, Zee TV, HBO, etc.

Safety

Bhutan is a safe country where you can walk around freely. Most shops close early, but stray dogs can be a disturbance at night.

The altitude may affect some visitors. It is recommended to rest for a few hours and stay hydrated. Trekking at high altitudes may cause acute altitude sickness, in which case descending to lower grounds is advised. Those with high blood pressure should bring necessary medications.

Time Difference

Bhutan Standard Time is six hours ahead of GMT, 30 minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time, one hour behind Thailand, and 15 minutes ahead of Nepal.
